Past Continuous Tense in Hindi with Examples 

• Past Continuous Tense In Hindi के वाक्यो के अंत मे 'रहा था' ,'रही थी' , 'रहे थे आदि शब्द पाए जाते है.
• ऐसे वाक्यों में काम का जारी रहना भूतकाल में पाया जाता है।

रहा था' ,'रही थी' , 'रहे थे

Person	Singular	Plural
First Person	मैं खेल रहा था । I was playing.	हम खेल रहे थे । We were playing
Second Person		तुम सो रहे थे । You were sleeping.
Third Person	वह गाय खरीद रहा था । He was buying a cow.	वे गाय खरीद रहे थे । They were buying a cow.

       मैं खाना खा रहा था।  - I was eating the food.
       मीना सो रही थी।       - Meena was sleeping.
       वह पढ़ रहा था।     -    He was reading
       क्या सुरेश नहा रहा था।   -   Was Suresh bathing.

STRUCTURE :

1. Affirmative Sentences  In Past Continuous Tense in Hindi

Rule 1- He, she, it, I और सभी एक वचन कर्ता के साथ was लगाकर verb के first form के अंत में ing लगाते है।

Rule 2 - You, we, they और बहुवचन कर्ता (Subject ) के साथ were का प्रयोग कर verb की first form में ing जोड़ देते है ।

⇒ Sub + was / were + verb में ing + obj

Examples :

1. मैं अपनी किताब पढ़ रहा था।
   I was learning my book.
2. वे मेरे नौकर को बुला रहे थे।
   They were calling my servant.
3.  हम अपना पाठ याद कर रहे थे।
   We were learning our lesson.
4.  मैं गहरी नींद में सो रहा था।
   I was sleeping soundly.
5.  राम दीवार से कूद रहा था।
   Ram was jumping from the wall.
6. मैं स्कूल जा रहा था।
   I was going to school.

2. Negative Sentences In Past Continuous Tense in Hindi

Rule 3 - Negative Sentences में was / were के बाद not लगा देते है ।

⇒ Sub + was / were + not  + verb में ing+ obj

Example :

1.  मैं अपनी किताब नही पड़ रहा था।
   I was not reading my book.
2. वे मेरे नौकर को नही बुला रहे थे।
   They were not calling my servant.
3.  मैं गहरी नींद में नही सो रहा था।
   I was not sleeping soundly.
4. राम दीवार से नही कूद रहा था।
   Ram was not jumping from the wall.
5.  मैं स्कूल नही जा रहा था।
   I was not going to school.
6. दोनों भाई बाजार से से मिठाई नही खरीद रहे थे।
   Both brothers was not buying sweet in market.

   3. Interrogative Sentences In Past Continuous Tense in Hindi

Rule 4- Interrogative Sentences में was या were कर्ता (Subject) से पहले लगाते है और verb में ing जोड़ देते है ।

⇒ Was / were + sub +(not) + verb में ing + obj

Example :

1.  क्या वह अपना पाठ याद कर रहा था ?
   Was he learning his lesson?
2. क्या वे मेरे नौकर को बुला रहे थे ?
   Were they calling my servant?
3.  क्या हम बाजार जा रहे थे ?
   Were we going to market?
4. क्या मैं तुम्हारे साथ नही जा रहा था ?
   Was I not going with you?
5.  क्या राम दीवार से नही कूद रहा था ?
   Was Ram not jumping from the wall?
6.  क्या वे लड़के शोर नही मचा रहे थे ? 
   Were they boys not making a noise?

4. Double Interrogative Sentences In Past Continuous Tense in Hindi

Rule 5 - यदि वाक्य के बीच में प्रश्नसूचक शब्द जैसे - 'क्या ','क्यों ' , 'कब ','कैसे ,'कहाँ ' आदि हो तो सबसे पहले उसकी अंग्रेजी लगाकर फिर was / were लगाते है ।

⇒  Why / when / how etc. + Was / were + Sub +(not) + verb में ing + obj + ?

Example :

1. वे मेरे नौकर को क्यो बुला रहे थे ?
   Why were they calling my servant?
2. तुम कहाँ जा रहे थे?
   Where were you going?
3.  राम कब दीवार से कूद रहा था ?
   When was Ram jumping from the wall?
4. वह अपना पाठ क्यों नही याद कर रहा था ?
   Why was he not learning his lesson?
5.  वह कमरे में क्या कर रहा था ?   
   What was he doing in the room?
6. किसान अपना खेत क्यों नही जोत रहा था? 
   Why was the farmer not plowing in the field?

Past Continuous Tense Examples In Hindi ( Affirmative Sentences सकारात्मक वाक्य )

1. मैं खाना बना रही थी। 
2. तुम स्नान कर रहे थी। 
3. सीता एक मधुर गीत गा रही थी। 
4. रोहन अपने घर जा रहा था। 
5. मैं गहरी नींद में सो रहा था। 
6. राजा जंगल में शिकार कर रहा था। 
7. वह दीवार से कूदने की कोशिश कर रहा था। 
8. वह एक कप चाय ला रही थी। 
9. हम तुम्हारे घर आ रहे थे । 
10. धोबी गंदे कपडे धो रहा था। 

English Translation -

1. I was cooking
2. You were taking a bath.
3. Sita was singing a melodious song.
4. Rohan was going to his house.
5. I was fast asleep.
6. The king was hunting in the forest.
7. He was trying to jump through the wall.
8. She was bringing a cup of tea.
9. We were coming to your house.
10. The washerman was washing dirty clothes.

Past Continuous Tense Examples in Hindi ( Negative Sentences नकारात्मक वाक्य )

1. हम बाजार नहीं जा रहे थी। 
2. हम मेज पर नहीं सो रहे थे। 
3. वे घर नहीं जा रहे थे। 
4. तुम फुटवाल नहीं खेल रहे थी। 
5. माँ खाना नहीं पका रहीं थी। 
6. तुम आज स्कूल नहीं जा रहे थी। 
7. गाय घास नहीं चर रही थी। 
8. राम मैदान में नहीं खेल रहा था। 
9. वे बाजार नहीं जा रहे थी। 
10. मै पुस्तक नहीं पढ़ रहा था। 

English Translation

1. We were not going to the market.
2. We were not sleeping on the table.
3. They were not going to home.
4. You were not playing football.
5. Mother was not cooking.
6. You were not going to school today.
7. The cow was not grazing the grass.
8. Ram was not playing in the field.
9. She was not going to the market.
10. I was not reading the book.

Past Continuous Tense Examples in Hindi ( Introgative Sentences प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य )

1. क्या तुम आज स्कूल नहीं जा रहे थे?
2. क्या कमला गाना नहीं गा रही थी?
3. क्या मोहन अपने नौकर को गाली दे रहा था?
4. क्या मैं तुम्हारे साथ नहीं खेल रहा था?
5. क्या वह घर नहीं जा रहा था ?
6. वह कमरे में क्या कर रहा था ?
7. तुम कहाँ जा रहे थे ?
8. किसान अपना खेत क्यों नहीं जोत रहा था ?
9. मैदान में कौन खेल रहा था ?
10. तुम कल इस समय क्या कर रहे थी ?

English Translation -

1. Were you not going to school today?
2. Was Kamala not singing a song?
3. Was Mohan abusing his servant?
4. Was I not playing with you?
5. Was he not going home?
6. What was he doing in the room?
7. Where were you going?
8. Why was the farmer not plowing his field?
9. Who was playing on the field?
10. What were you doing yesterday?
